In order to validate and improve our concept, we conducted a pilot study at Basel University Hospital in spring 2012. As part of this study, an illness-specific PocketDoktor® book was given to a total of 100 patients in the Department of Abdominal Surgery either prior to or shortly after surgery. The subject areas were: diverticulitis, inguinal hernia, appendicitis, colorectal tumours and gall stones. During the convalescence period, the patients read the books and completed a questionnaire. 96% of the patients rated the images designed to explain their illness as either good or very good. The informative content of the books was also rated as good or very good in 96% of cases. 100% of the respondents felt that the books were either helpful or very helpful in improving their understanding of the particular illness. In addition to the positive feedback from patients, the books were also extremely well received by doctors, care staff and relatives.
